KPIG RADIO CUTS STAFF: THE CORPORATE SWINE GNAW AWAY AT QUALITY AGAIN
By Brad Kava, 11:20 AM in Brad Kava, Music, Radio

The firings of two KPIG disc jockeys last week may seem like a small thing, but it was front page news in the Santa Cruz Sentinel Saturday---and rightly so.

KPIG-FM (107.5) is one of the nation's last bastions of freeform radio, where music is chosen with some panache and integrity. It was one of the first roots rock music stations in the country and, despite corporate ownership, has maintained some quality in playing serendipitous rock, bluegrass, blues and country.

But bit by bit owner Mapleton Communications, which owns 27 mid-sized stations and has owned the Pig since 2001, has been hacking away at the quality.

First, it dropped its annual summer concert, the "Swine Soiree." Now, it got rid of its overnight DJ's as a cost cutting measure. Never mind that they made $10 an hour, or at most $10,000 a year and the savings don't come near outweighing the loss of real quality radio. Deejays Jessie and Terrence were let go, and afternoon jock Ramblin' Ror was cut from full to part time.

This is one of the last stations to maintain an overnight deejay, but as real radio fans know, that is one of the most important times to hear a live voice, or have someone to call and ask what that great song you just heard was.

"There's no other radio stations from Seattle to Los Angeles that has one," corporate spokesmouth Dale Hendry told the Sentinel.

Remember when owners competed and tried to offer the public something better than the other guy had? Nowadays it seems like the corporate objective is to cut things to the barebones and make as much profit as possible, so you can fly off into the night to your Hawaii pad on your private jet with your $100 million when you sell your "beloved" media property.

Sad days indeed.

  1. Mapleton blew it, the effects will be felt by everyone, why do I need Real.com now? My main listening time was Terrences' show. Middle of the night Pig was what made the Pig unique, with all the canned streaming music available, do they think it's the music alone that kept listeners??? Come on Mapleton $10 an hr to keep a anywhere from hundreds to possibly thousands of fans worldwide listening. Pig fans are a special bunch of people we go out of our way to "support our local sponsers". Come on Mr. Knox, come on Sunset Bar & grill, all of you "sponsers" flex your muscle, cancel your ads, fuck Mapleton, if they don't see what they have done, fire the asshole that made that wise decision, restore Terrence, give him a wage realistic to Northern CA cost of living, the whole staff in fact. You don't know how lucky you have been to be able to retain all of the the talent you have on the wages offered to these talented personalities. Come on San Francisco you have a lot of clout, mapleton saw an opportunity in you, don't let them use you in their corporate greed.
Myself,I will keep Real.com for 10 days, if nothing has changed somhow, I'll cancel my subsription. Maybe no big deal to lose a subcriber here or there but as most of us know there is power in numbers it's a basic concept, look at gang mentality, ok now I'm off on a rant, I know enough to stop here.

  2. I listen to KPIG daily, after Bill Ashfords show on The Rock Garden and although I can still get it free on my PC, I no longer get it on my Macs. I downloaded VLC but I can't seem to get it running.

Does anyone know about KOTR up in Cambria, CA? I listened to them for years whenever visiting my little brother in Los Osos.

  4. I am disgusted by this change. Tell the sponsors to stop supporting this mess.
Laura is SO miserable and cranky on the air it could ruinb your day if you start it that way.
I miss Dallas and Jesse and Rambling much. Karson snarls too much and plays Santana every damn day.. it just sucks.
Bring back the happy DJ's and get rid of those bored cranky voices.
BOYCOTT the sponsors and tell em.

  5. Karson Sucks.
My wife and I met because of Kpig. We have been devoted listerners for years but now we have deceided to turn off Kpig. We have had enough of Mapleton...I think they are cutting costs to make Kpig more marketable to a buyer.
