KFAT Online!

One of the very last commercial freeform stations... "KFAT is the only dead radio station you can listen to on your computer..." You gotta listen and read sections like "KFAT Memories"...

Radio successor KPIG is still alive and doing well. Check them out, too.

  1. KFAT was great...it took the energy of KMPX and KSAN and "Country-Fried" it..the signal penetrated the S.F. Bay Area up into southern Sonoma County in The Valley Of The Moon.

BTW...KVRE is a rather overlooked station in Santa Rosa...it was doing the same thing as KFAT but with much lower power; you could not hear it more than 25 miles away. It was an AM-FM combo, and had chickens (including Rowdy The Rooster, who was immortalized on the front cover of the KVRE record album), that lived under the station out on Whistler Av south of Santa Rosa...

The KVRE-AM signoff is the best I've ever heard...the AM was a daytime only station that signed off at local sunset.

The parallels are uncanny in the KFAT and KVRE were "born" and "died" about the same time. Kate Wolf was a KVRE dj on Thursday nights.

The stations in Santra Rosa now really suck in being erzatz free form...they just aren't quite sure what to do with the old KVRE AM-FM audience, and KPIG, although a real good station is only a shadow of it's KFAT heritage...

Nat all is lost...tune in WWW.KMUD.ORG Mondays 1:oo PM to 3:o PM (Pacific Time Zone) for TUBBY TUNES with Long John or Fat Mud with Weird Harold..Harold used to work at KFAT and Long John was at KMPX as an observer on Dusty Street's FIRST DAY...He's also The Calistoga Kid that Shel Silverstein wrote about, although a few facts were changed in the song.

TRUE free form GONZO radio is not dead YET...so tell a friend, turn somebody on to something other than the bombardment of what commercial radio has become...

    Take care...

  2. Hi Pigs and Fat folk everywhere. this is Sister Tiny. I want my turntables back. I want to know all the new music and i want to play it for you. I want to play the songs Lucinda, Eliza,Steve EARL sing that nobody will play. I don't want to sit in front of a computer and pick the music. I want to make segues. I am turning 60 in two months. I need this job. I'm good and I can do it. Satelite radio needs me. I've heard what's there. Meridith does real good sometimes but there is no mix like the FAT mix and it's good and people love it. And miss it. Get me back on the air, somebody. love Tiny

  3. What Tiny said. Get her a job, somebody.

She's mentioned in a story I wrote on KHIP back in the eighties, which can be found at

    http://midtown.net/dragonwing/khip.htm

She's better than good, she's scary good.

  4. Geez it's amazing what one finds when one randomly googles KFAT. I remember Sister Tiny, and she should be on the air. Somebody out there must have some pull, eh? Get that voice on the air!

JLT, saw your post on Gilbert's site and I hope you can post those digitized tapes for download - hint, hint.

  6. I miss K.V.R.E. radio and nothing has come close to the quality of music and musical knowledge.
Another great radio station was K.K.C.Y. The City in San Francisco, CA.

  7. I don't know if it's a step in the right direction, but I've been promoted (?) to Anonymous...heh heh...

Some of our Fat Friends are broadcasting in Gerlach, Nevada (!!!) on KLAP-LP...google it and check them out...(you've got clap in yer ear)...

And yeah, Khatarooksi, KVRE was definately a high point in north Bay broadcasting (I used to live in Calistoga), and the KVRE-AM radio signoff that Ed LaFrance did still cracks me up everytime I hear it...

Since my last post I've "semi-retired" from doing a regular radio show, but now am involved in "The Homestead Radio Show" on KMUD-FM...and life in northern Mendocino County IS good...

I sometimes fill in for Weird Harold when he's out of town...but much of my creative time (such as it is) is devoted to video & photography, besides collecting strange (& good) songs...

And in honage to Wes "Scoop" Nisker...If you don't like the radio you listen to, go out and make some radio of your own...

I worked at 106.1 KFAT FM in Corvallis, Oregon from '87-92. I got turned on to so much cool f-ing music there it changed my life. Everything from Emmylouand Lefty Frizzell to Neil Youn and the Mission Mountain Wood Band. It was the best years of my life. -"Gentleman" Jim Lee
